I think that history may be repeating itself over and over.
We know that Locke died to help get everyone back to the island, but we haven't been told "why" he had to die to make it work. Faraday's mother said that they had to replicate the other plane crash as closely as possible. Sayid was the prisoner instead of Kate and Locke was in the casket instead of Christian Shepherd. Christian Shepherd was seen by many after the crash even though he was on the plane in a casket. Locke crashed in a casket in the most recent crash and yet looked alive and well on the beach after wards.
This makes me think that Christian Shepherd was on the island prior to the plane crash from season 1. He had to leave the island to bring people back and he had to die to fill the casket to make it work and replicate an even earlier plane crash.
Each time there is a new crash, there are "extras" on the plane. Jack asked Ben, what happens to all these other people? Ben replied who cares. So there seem to be people who weren't previously involved that get drug into the happenings of the island.
New people arrive on the island each time there is a crash in addition to the regulars and frequent flyers/crashers.
Danielle Rousseau had her baby on the island. Alex was conceived before Danielle arrived on the island. Alex was later executed as a way to punish Ben in an eternal battle with Widmore.
Claire delivered Aaron on the island. Aaron was conceived before Claire arrived on the island. So far, those are the only two babies I can think of that were actually born on the island. Claire warns Kate not to bring Aaron back to the island and I think she did it because history has a way or repeating itself.
With that being said, I just shot my Sawyer is Jacob theory all to hell, because it would actually make more sense if Jack became Jacob. The Jack that just returned to the island. Notice the name similarity and maybe Jack is even short for Jacob. It would explain Claire and Christian being in the cabin with him. It would also explain why Claire told Kate not to bring Aaron back to the island. Widmore could use Aaron against him, like he used Alex against Ben.
Last thing we know about the Jack and John relationship is that John left Jack a note that said "I wish you believed me." If Jack is Jacob, then this is his chance to show a little faith in John and make him the leader.
Whoa! I've lost myself here. Bare with me. I may be way off base, but I'm having fun working the puzzle!

I think you are onto something. Over the course of this show, we've seen several -- I don't know what to call them -- meta-patterns repeat themselves. You know what I'm talking about; all those coincidences that brought this group of people together and make their experiences super-freaky. At first, it seemed like these meta-patterns were just storytelling flourishes or gimmicks. But now that time travel has been introduced, it raises the possibility that these seemingly coincidental mirror-twin events are more likely the result of time loops caused by these characters re-visiting the same periods of time.
ReplyDeleteAny other way, it doesn't make sense to me what Ms. Hawking said: that they had to reproduce the configuration of the original 815 plane crash. It doesn't make sense unless those people [the 2007 versions of the O6 plus 2007 Ben] have a role to play on the island circa 1970-whatever. Some of the rules they've laid out for us are that a) you cannot change the past [what happened, happened], unless b) you are Desmond, and c) the universe will always course correct.
Aha! Perhaps the urgency for returning the O6 to the island would be that if they didn't do whatever needed doing on the island [entering the 1970s-equivalent of the numbers into the computer at the Hatch] that the universe would course-correct in a potentially disastrous way. Disastrous to whom? My guess is that it would have terrible consequences, not for the 815ers, but for old timers, the grey-haired string pullers like Ms. Hawking, Widmore, and possibly Ben.
And who does this make Jacob? I don't know. My gut tells me that it's Locke, but your Sawyer theory isn't bad. I wouldn't be surprised if Rose ends up being Jacob at this point.
I think all of the 'extra' survivors on O815 were people that did not have previous ties to the island, and that's why they had to die there.
ReplyDeleteSeems like everyone w/o previous ties to the island are now gone. All the remaining survivors have been to the island before, perhaps they were all children of the Dharma initiative or part of it (Rose and Bernard?). We still don't know anything about Desmond's background, right?
I definitely think there is something to your theory. I think Claire is the one that is pregnant this time around. Why it has to happen in replication, iunno ...
